FIGHT!

The sun was just sinking over the horizon, setting the water on fire and turning it a glorious blazing red. The sky was tickled pink and magenta with streaks of purple here and there. Clouds drifted over the water, disappearing into wisps and soon the sky was a murky, ink-black. Despite the beautiful sunset, Hatchet could tell something bad was bound to happen. For one, the sky was a dirty, dusty black instead of the usual soothing deep indigo-blue. He quietly roused his one remaining packmate for a midnight snack. He didn’t feel safe where he was. It almost felt like someone was stalking them. His one packmate got up growling uneasily, still traumatized by the death of his mate, brother and two other close friends when they had first moved into the territory, originally owned by a large bull tyrannosaurus. A terrible fight had ensued, and they lost four close pack members.  The tyrannosaurus had retreated, but right now it felt like he was back watching them.

Hunting them.

Stalking them.

A light breeze rustled the leaves overhead. Thunder tensed as the hated allosaurs came closer, but stopped when the delicious aroma of leallynasaura wafted past. A small band of the nocturnal leallynasaurids grazed silently on shrubbery, their glowing green eyes giving them away. Thunder watched as the allosaur who fancied himself leader snuck up behind the unwary prey. Suddenly the (prey) leader bolted upright. Ha! The stupid allosaurus had forgotten to keep downwind of his prey! The whole pack took off at a terrific speed, but one unfortunate leallynasaura youngster stumbled. Dragged by the tail further and further back, it set about squealing its head off until the other allosaur closed in from the front and abruptly crushed its windpipe. Now was the time to strike; if he won- and he MUST win- he would also get a free meal. Allosaurs tasted horrible, he had learned that last time. Leallynasaura, on the other foot, was tender and delicious. ENOUGH DAYDREAMING! He yelled at himself. He crouched, every muscle quivering in anticipation, every tendon taut and ready for action. Then with a roar, he sprang.

Ax was really uncomfortable. REALLY, REALLY uncomfortable. Hatchet had left to look for slumbering stegosaurs and had promised to be back in a few bites. Why, then, was there no trace of him after nearly forty-three tail-lengths of time? Shaking his head in confusion, Ax finished off the leallynasaura and started to search for Hatchet. Sometime later, he followed Hatchet's scent trail right back to the leallynasaura skeleton. But something was wrong. Was it because there were gigantic footprints over the leallynasaura corpse? Or because the bones were crushed to splinters? Or was it because Hatchet was lying face down in a puddle of his own blood? There was a slight disturbance behind Ax, a small rush of air, a bunching of muscles. Then he was slammed to the ground as a ten-ton weight barreled into him. He sprang up, resilient as rubber, and turned to face his attacker. He found himself face-to face with a black Tyrannosaurus rex, muscular to the point where his muscles had muscles. His hide was crisscrossed with scars and his eyes glowed red. Ax backed away, his brain storming to remember why this beast seemed so familiar. It nudged him in the chest, sending him sprawling into the bushes. Swallowing his fear, and pushing aside all thoughts, Ax charged and leapt onto the beast’s back. He tore at the thick black hide, then jumped off again, then bull rushed the tyrannosaurus a second time. He caught a glimpse of Hatchet rising like a phoenix from the ashes and slamming his jaws into the enemy’s chest. This was a full-on melee!

Thunder bellowed in pain as the hateful allosaurs hacked at his hide. Trying to shake them off, he charged headlong into a tree, then lumbered through the forest at full speed, two or three meters a stride. But it seemed impossible. Every time they finally fell off, they would roll out of the way of his oncoming foot and jump right back on. The fight wore on, with the two allosaurs ignoring the lashing branches and slowly overpowering him. Soon he could take no more and sank to the ground in defeat.

Hatchet planted a foot on Thunder’s head and roared in victory. They had won! And this time without even losing anyone! Suddenly the ground rose up beneath him and slammed him to the ground. The last thing he felt was a fierce pain shooting through his back, then the world went black.

Ax watched in mute terror as Thunder dispatched Hatchet with a swift crushing bite to the spine. Every single instinct was screaming at him to run, but he was frozen, rooted to the spot. A deep anger welled up inside him. This monster had killed all five of his packmates without even batting a scaly eyebrow. He would honor them and avenge their deaths, or die trying.

He rushed the larger dinosaur, taking him completely by surprise. By some chance, Thunder’s head was lowered, ready to head-butt Ax in the stomach and flip him into the air. Ax had other plans. With a fearsome roar even Hatchet would be proud of…

He leapt.

Three tons of extra weight landed on Thunder’s head, sending him staggering and crashing headfirst into a tree. But that wasn’t all. Ax then sprang off Thunder’s broad head (shoving Thunder’s face further into the tree and driving a small twig up his nose in the process) and kicked him full force in the side. Thunder shook him off with an angry snort. Then he EXPLODED.

He kicked Ax in the head several times before picking him up and flinging him into a tree. He forced Ax’s tail under a boulder before yanking it out again. Then for the final blow. He grabbed Ax’s head in his jaws. Ax head-butted him in the face, sending broken teeth flying everywhere. Ha! That wouldn’t help. Even if his teeth didn’t puncture that tiny brain of his, the sheer bite force would crush his fragile skull. WHAM! He bit down. Ax crumpled to the ground with a snap! and stayed there.

Finally satisfied, Thunder stalked off to re-mark the borders, for night had turned to day during the long but worthwhile and victorious battle. After that was managed, he returned for the leallynasaura. But something didn’t feel right. Almost as if the hunter was being hunted. The stalker was being stalked. A shadow loomed over him, just before meter-long jaws slammed down on him and he fell down dead.

Little motes of colour were dancing in front of Ax’s eyes. Were those his five packmates? Yes they were! They were all healthy and in their prime with none of their battle wounds. Everything was so beautiful. And he was happy! Then the lights dimmed and the pulsing blobs of colour danced away. Ax gave a despairing roar and tried to run up to Hatchet. He ran and ran, but he never got any closer. “Not now, Ax! But soon!” Hatchet bellowed. The other four pack members waved sadly, then faded away like breath into the wind.

The second Ax regained consciousness, he knew what he must do. A grotesque snuffling was coming from the other side of the clearing. Ax glanced over and saw the huge, hulking figure of Thunder. Immediately every muscle tried to stop him again, but he pulled through. He had to do this for his friends.

Slowly, every muscle ready to bolt the other direction, Ax crept over to Thunder, revealing a crushed branch where his head was before. Thunder was so absorbed in his meal he didn’t even notice. Ax could hardly believe Thunder couldn’t hear him; his heart hammering in his chest sounded like it would burst out any time. Then he attacked before he could have any second thoughts. FOR HATCHET! He thought, slamming his upper jaw down on Thunder’s neck. AND STRIIKER! AND AROTH! AND GRINDER! AND SILVERSUN!

Thunder let out his last roar and fell over, blood streaming from his neck. Ax finally felt at peace. He had finally avenged his fallen clan-mates, and now it was time to join them. With a sigh, he looked up. He wanted the stars to be his last sight, but there was only the empty blue sky, stretching on forever. Then he gave himself up. He lapsed into a deep sleep from which he would never wake up, though when he did, it would be in a new world, where everything sparkled and everyone was happy. The place of eternal dreams.

AND THE WINNER IS......

tie.

Just kidding!

ALLOSAURUS!!!!!

Advantage in numbers (even though one is still a number), better motivation, speed and agility beat sheer strength this time.

It's never too late to comment. If you read this, you could just say 'I read this' or something. It doesn't matter if you're posting two years after the topic started, as long as I know you read it.

For some reason i can't edit this thing and it keeps teleporting me off the site or to the top of the page. So here's the note I forgot to write:

Author's note: Although Allosaurus fragilis registered a fairly weak bite for its size, by no means was its skull weak. In fact, tests show that the skull of Allosaurus could withstand an amazing 6 tons of pressure before cracking.
