A Better Shelter

I was the first one to wake up, as usual. The other three were out cold on the floor a few feet away from me. The sun was up, and the shed was lit up. I looked around and didn't see much. There was stuff, designed for thing I don't need but I could easily misuse, hanging on the wall, there was no glass in the window; just metal bars, the door was reinforced, and there was another door in the back of the shed.

I reached for the knob on the door and gave it a turn. I was pleasantly surprised when the door actually opened. I was expecting it to be locked or rusted shut, but it opened properly. I grabbed on of the guys' assault rifles because it had a flashlight and shone it down the hallway. I noticed there was a light switch and flicked it. Nothing. I looked farther down the hallway and saw another door at the opposite end. Other than that, the hallway was empty.

I walked down the hallway to the door at the opposite end. I opened it with the same success as the first door. I looked around in the new place. It looked like a storage room. There was nothing but seemingly useless junk. I continued looking around and figured this was an entire building. I went back to get the guys before continuing looking around.

The guys weren't happy about being woken up. Can't say I'm surprised; I'm never happy about waking up either. They handled it like small children though.

"Five more minutes!"

"How about no? I gave you a half hour when I looked around this damn building while you slept."

"Has it been five minutes?"

"No."

"Then f*ck off."

"Ok, it's been five minutes."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"It doesn't feel like five minutes."

"Well it has been, so get up before I kick your ass."

"Why don't you f*ck off and not come back?"

"Because for any hungry predator, you three pieces of shit without me would be like shooting fish in barrel."

"Would not."

"Yeah it would be."

"No it wouldn't."

"We seriously doing this?"

"Guess we are."

"You know I'm gonna win. I'm more stubborn than the three of you put together."

"Seriously, just f*ck off. We're better off without you."

"You guys are part of my team, we travel as a group. You're coming with me."

"Oh, so now it's you're coming with me wether you like it or not, eh? What happened to follow me or don't, I don't care?"

"I knew you guys would follow me. Now grab your shit and let's go."

"Well what if I don't want too?"

"Do what you want, I'm out."

I turned around and went back down the hallway. They can do what they want, I officially don't care. I'm better off on my own anyway. I've never had an official "group" in my life. Well, I did. Still have those clowns. My bosses. Funny story I may or may not get into later. Long story short, got a job when I was younger, bosses were pretty cool, we became close friends. To make the story long, I'd have to get in depth. Not just that they were fun to be with and tell stories about the good times. I'd have to get deeper than that. The trust, the emotional connection, the support, everything. Those two I care about. I looked at the ring on my finger. I care about her the most though. The people I care about most are back home and safe. These three jackasses I could care less about.

I walked around the building. There wasn't much to see. A kitchen, a lounge room, some offices, a few more stories labeled "observation". This building wasn't overly impressive, but it was high enough that when I got to the roof I stayed and enjoyed the view.

The sun was still rising. It was your typical sunrise colours, so this wasn't any different than watching from your porch at home. What made it different was the thin layer of fog, combined with the calls of sauropods in the distance. The sun light reflected off the fog and morning dew, causing the air, grass and trees to sparkle. The scenery was gorgeous. This is one of those situations where pretty much anyone born in the mid 1990's and later would pull out their phone and take a picture. I belong to that age group, but I'm not that type. Never did get along very well with the stereotypical "kids these days". Even if I could right now, I wouldn't take a picture.

I lied down with the AX50 and took aim after a while. May as well get comfortable. The guys showed up and they won't do shit all now that they've say down. I stayed up for quite a while. Not sure how long, but a while. The sun went down, but the night was so clear that I could still see far enough to hit a target a mile out. The sun rose and set again, and I got tired. My five year old self would have regarded me as the most badass man alive for staying up three days straight. My fifteen year old self would have regarded me as the most badass man alive because of my arsenal and the fact that I've killed some big dinosaurs.

Neither of them are me anymore. I'm twenty one. I'm engaged. I don't want to be here. I want to go home and never come back to this damn island. I want to be able to yell "f*ck off" at my alarm clock, curl up under the covers with my girl, and go back to sleep. I'm doing what I have to do to survive is what I'm doing. Being stuck on a rock like this really makes you appreciate what you've got.

It must have been three days and I won't be able to go much longer. I asked the guys if any of them wanted to take over.

"Might as well take over for a bit. You're no good to us if you're barely awake."

I had no answer for that. I handed Bryce the AX50 and went to sleep.

Great chapter, I can relate with group projects at my school with your character... Like you'll be the reason they're still doing good, and then they treat you like shit when you just want to get to the group task in front of you.
